We used to refer to these mystery toy dispensers as Tikam Tikam Toy Machine. It was likened to “gambling” and it was an EVIL way for these enterprising "entrepreneurs" to suck gullible school kids out of their pocket money. Just insert a coin, turn the knob and cross your fingers that the random pick is a big ticket item and not some small consolation prize like a cheap eraser. They were found in front of housing estate provision stores and toy stores. You can still find them in the older neighbourhoods like Toa Payoh and Tanglin Halt. They have mostly been replaced by fancier Gashapon (ガシャポン), also called Gachapon (ガチャポン), capsule toy machines. Go check out any Don Don Donki store front!
